Made in Germany c. Bisque Head / Composition Body. Marked:WG (stylized) Made in Germany 45. This Dapper Dan is just adorable! He is a 23 William Goebel character child made in Germany c. Of special interest is the unusual, transitional mark. His head is incised “45” and the mold is nearly identical to their well-known “B5″ mold (which often had no Goebel insignia at all) with its signature happy, innocent look and two upper teeth. The history of Goebel’s marking is interesting. Their earliest bisque doll heads (1880s) were simply marked with a triangle and crescent moon. At the turn of the century, they began using various forms of “W” and “G” intertwined — which is where this doll’s mark comes in, and it’s one of their rarest — until they finally settled on the best-known mark with a wide “W” and a “G” with a crown at the top. This cheerful boy is in great condition with superb face painting that includes multi-stroke brows; accented lips, eye corners, and nostrils; as well as nice cheek blush. The tip of his tongue is visible inside his mouth, and he has the distinctive Goebel two upper teeth. He has a spotless stamped composition ball-jointed body marked Made in Germany. He is fabulously dressed in a three-piece suit consisting of brown wool jacket and trousers, with a brocade vest. Under that, he has a lace-trimmed button-up shirt and nice two-piece undergarments. His matching hat and antique red leather button-up shoes complete the outfit. And let’s not forget the spectacles and brooch, which make him look so scholarly! Not all dolls exude this much personality, but he sure does! Let his smile chase away the winter blues! No issues found with the bisque after careful examination. The composition body is in excellent condition, with good stringing and no noteworthy issues. IMPORTANT: Besides the noteworthy issues mentioned above, EXPECT any antique doll (bisque/composition/leather/china/wood) to ALSO have: (1) SIGNS OF AGE – for example: toned/crazed/chipped composition, minor wig pulls, loss of “hair” lashes on bisque heads, not-so-tight stringing, etc. (2) MINOR CONSERVATION WORK by previous owners/collectors – for example: reset eyes in most cases! , repairs to wig, repairs to clothing, touch-ups on composition/finish/paint, etc. Any MAJOR issues — hairline crack, total repaint, etc. – would be itemized above, but these normal age/conservation details are not.
